What are Paid Work Placement Programmes?
Paid Work Placement Programmes provide Students and other Beneficiaries the opportunity to work in companies for between eight weeks and 12 months, earning a small amount of money whilst at the same time developing their English Language skills and improving on their general vocational experience.

What Vocational Sectors are available?
Paid Work Placements are only available in a limited number of commercial sectors. These are:

  • Hotels - working in the hotel bar, restaurant, kitchen and general housekeeping
  • Restaurants - working in restaurants and fast food outlets as waiters, cleaners and in the kitchen
  • Bars and clubs - serving behind a bar, collecting and cleaning glasses and general cleaning
  • Commercial Services - working as hygiene operatives (cleaners etc)

What Payment can I expect for working in the company?
Paid Work Placements attract at least the United Kingdoms National Minimum Wage. This is currently between £3.80 and £4.50 (before tax and National Insurance) per hour. For the exact rates please visit the UK National Minimum Wage Information Pages which are provided by the Department of Trade and Industry.

What will I gain from doing a Paid Work Placement?
Work experience is becoming increasingly vital in students' personal and career development. It enables you to show that:
• you can transfer your academic learning into the workplace (in certain sectors);
• you have the skills and qualities that employers are looking for.
The benefits of work experience for you include:
• the opportunity to earn a small amount whilst working and studying;
• the opportunity to learning about workplace cultures;
• the opportunity to develop the skills and qualities that are in demand from employers;
• assistance with career choice, strategies and contacts in a rapidly changing working world;
• improved prospects for both employment and higher earnings;
• to live and work in another culture

What sort of work will I do in the company?
The kind of work you will do in the company will depend very much on your own knowledge, experience and enthusiasm.
Typically, Beneficiaries start with basic tasks supporting people already employed in the company, and as their experience and confidence grows, their work placement supervisor will increase the complexity of the tasks and the responsibility you have.

What sort of Placement can I expect?
Work Experience UK will find you a work placement based on the information you provide us.
When thinking about the type of work placement you would like to undertake, you should consider your own knowledge and skills and define your work placement requirement that best matches these.

What will my hours of work be?
When working within a British company, you will be expected to work the same hours and in the same shift system as those worked by the other employees in the company.
In the UK, people typically work a 40 hour week, which includes breaks. Hours of work are generally between 0900 and 1700 Monday to Friday.
However, it is important that you recognise that the majority of the companies that may employ you on a paid work placement will operate a seven day shift system, starting early in the morning (about 0600) and finishing late (perhaps after midnight.
